At Alert Glass we make mirrors. Our silvering plant is the largest in NZ and takes glass up to 2.5M x 3.5M

Silvering is done by first cleaning the glass thoroughly then applying a mixture of Stannous chloride which acts like a tinning agent. Silver nitrate with reducer is then sprayed onto the glass. After rinsing, a coating of copper and zinc is applied. When dry a coat of zinc paint is applied.

We also import and stock mirror in large sizes.

As well as stock mirror Alert Glass also stocks imported stock sized mirrors with or without beveled edges. Prices can be checked by clicking here.

As well as plain silvering Alert Glass can make mirrors with clear sections called blockouts. These mirrors can be used for monitor displays in retail or for framing a picture or photograph. Blockouts are used frequently by museums for breaking up displays and or having a TV or monitor providing images.

Almost any glass surface can be silvered except for perhaps acid etched glass which tends to turn brown and streaky. Telescope mirrors can be surface silvered, as can tubes and ornaments. Mirrors can also be stripped and resilvered. In most cases they can be restored to their former beauty. Coloured and antique glasses can be silvered and produce a wonderful range of textures.

Mirrors can develop black spots or black lines if standing in water or poorly ventilated on side facing the wall. Silicones should be avoided on any part of the mirror back. Blobs of any sealant or adhesive should be avoided, always place in lines of toothpaste size and use sparingly.
