Alert Glass was started in Hamilton in July 1982 by John Nielsen. While growing the business he invented and marketed the Transcat cat and dog door range.

This very successful product has been copied and used all around the world. In 1992 this part of the business was sold. As the business grew and expanded new lines were added like mirror making (silvering) and toughening (Alert Glass developed and perfected a mini glass tempering plant and is now the sole NZ manufacturer of small toughened glass like boiler sight glasses and bathroom shelves etc)

Another recent development was the acquisition of the Innovation on Glass, Waikato area manufacturer and supplier of painted glass.

This process developed in association with Resene Paints called the GCP paint system and uses the many colours that are available from Resene and by mixing a catalyst into the paint produces a glass hard finish on the back of glass. This finished product is guaranteed for 10 years against cracking peeling or delamination from the glass.

Also at the Greenwood Street site is Glasslab for all glass blowing and scientific glass tubing requirements.
